favorite Waterman spots?

Submitted by johnny2bad on Sun, 02/15/2009 - 6:27pm.

I'll be at Waterman on tuesday and would love to hear about anyone's favorite spots up there. I like steeps, trees, and the occasional drop.

It looks like we're gonna get it for the second week in a row:

AVALANCHE

Thanks for the info (highway2). If we get another series of storms that role in I'd be interested in checking it out, If anyone has interest in skiing it let me know.

Thanks

Thanks for the link. Looks like a lot of vert. Southbowl @ Baldy is sweet but it's just too short. Avalanche looks Maybe 2 or 3 times longer. I don't know but if we get more snow - I'm up it!

even

even without snow its a corn haven... coverage permitting

Side Country

New to the sight. Thanks for having me. Usually ski Baldy on a powder day but from what I remember Waterman has got some sick terrain. Looking for some info, has anyone here ever skied from the top of chair 2 out to what I'm thinking is the West and ended up back on the road. I remember a powder day back in the '98 (El Nino year) seeing a couple of tracks. Looks pretty straight forward as from the road you can see the face back down to the road. If you did a 2 car shuttle you might be able to get a lot of runs in. Anyone here ever skied this, any stories, any thoughts. Thanx

google earth

I (sadly) have never skied Waterman. That said, I have explored it intimately using Google Earth, and I believe those routes probably exist.

Google Earth is a free program, and AWESOME for exploring the mountains. Use it to "fly" through 3D terrain and satellite imagery. Download it; you will thank me. More info at www.earth.google.com or go to google and search "earth."

These should take you where you want to go:
lat=34.3484462979, lon=-117.929149799

Your best info will always come from others that have gone before you. Talk to them first. Be safe and smart in the backcountry.

welll

never done it myself but i guess it was great on feb.14 according to friends. its called avalanche, a gladed bowl about twice the size of south bowl at mt baldy and a little steeper. yu can just hitch hike back up as most of the locals take turns driving the pickup trucks down there and everyone just piles in the back, but dont tell chp. i was going to do it this weekend but i dont think i will be able to go tomorrow. it may be pretty good up there if they really got 3-4 inches.

Dude, it's not going to be

Dude, it's not going to be open on Tuesday. It's weekends only at Waterman.

snow phone

The Waterman snowphone was updated on Sunday night to say that the roads are closed above 6000 ft this morning (Presidents Day). They also imply that they are looking to open up following this storm. Keep you fingers crossed...

thanks for the heads up

Hopefully they will consider adding an extra day this weekend, given the conditions...
