The Good:
Mt. Baldy has made some very noticeable investments in snow-making equipment and overall improvements of the ski areas. The reservoir they build has made a obvious impact in their ability to maintain a pretty decent ski/boarding surface, and the new equipment has allowed them to keep more runs open.
The snow was getting thin and icy towards the end of the day. On some of the intermediate runs, like the fireroad to bonanza. However, with the warm nice weather throughout the day I cannot say this was unexpected. The thin snow seemed to be less acceptable for less experienced skiers, I thought it was fine though. =)
The Bad:
This weekend being the end of a long weekend, combined with the lack of snow in the baldy village and base areas of the mountain made for some pretty long loading lines to and feom the notch on chair 1. The worse of the two, by far, being getting off the mountain. I went up with my girlfriend and her little sister who did not go to ski and waited in line with them in the 'snow play' line to get off the mountain. We got in line at 4PM and we didn't get on the lift to get off the mountain until around 6:15PM.
It is important to note, they had a separate line for those who were skiing/boarding which was given loading priority over the 'snow play & scenic' line, and ALL ski/board people were down the mountain by around 5:45.
Word to the (snow-play) Wise:
If you have friends or family who intend to go up to the notch just to play in the snow -- tell them to plan to leave around 1-2PM, otherwise plan to be there after dark and to keep a change of DRY warm clothes handy.
NOW its the time!
It's dumping out there, I can see baldy from my backyard and its beautiful! this is the right time to go! No other resort in the area compares w Mt Baldy (when condition are good)
Everyone has to put that
Everyone has to put that disclaimer on there, "When conditions are good"
haha!
Yesterday was my first Baldy
Yesterday was my first Baldy experience and I wish So Cal had less douche bags. I had a good time despite the high winds and chair 2 breaking (phew, glad I wasn't stuck on that at 4 pm when the winds were blowing 50mph. One guy in line said they had to bring people down by rope one year when a chair broke!) What really annoyed me most are the idots that don't know how to drive and cause 10 car pile ups so it takes like 3 hours to get to the lifts. Then once the roads are cleared you still aren't moving because more idots are ahead of you who can't drive so you creep up the 45 degree incline while almost burning your clutch out. Yay! Plus another idot driving mom's minivan is riding your @$$. Um hello, I'm driving stick, stuck on a steep incline the entire way up. I should totally let my truck roll back and hit mom's ride. Then you can almost taste the snow when you appoach the parking lot, but another douche bag from behind the line of cars cuts the line off snagging the LAST parking lot spot. Really! WTF Mt Baldy employees, stop letting your douchy friends come here.
Ok so I turn around and park down the hill where I just came from, whatever. Park, change, hike, get in line, sweet another line! After another hour as I get closer to the ticket window I realize why this has been taking so long. Guy is arguing at the the ticket window for like 15 minutes about how his friend that works there was supposed to give him a pass and he didn't know that she was fired so he should still get the pass since he came up there...lady just give him the *%#$&@! pass so I can get mine. Lady finally gives him the pass and he walks away, sweet. Guy ahead of me has some other bullshit story about how he made reservations online and didn't bring the hard tickets with him because some employee told him not to bring them, yeah right. Please let me in I
even overnighted them from some dude I bought them off on craigslist, blah blah blah. Idiot.
Here's where I really lose it. First guy holding up ticket line comes back with his friend from the BACK of the line, cuts in front of me. No way 'bro', just because you once had a friend that worked here doesn't mean you and your buddies can cut. I move ahead of him and stick my tickets under the counter. I should have hit him, but I am a girl so I'm not sure how effective this would be.
To sum it up, not the mountain's fault for the douche bags that sometimes ride here ( though there is less concentration than other So Cal resorts), but if you don't own 4WD with SNOW TIRES don't come. The other resorts have nice clear roads that will service your lowered sports car with racing tires. You end up ruining a perfect day for the rest of us who know how to drive!
Keep Mt. Baldy Rustic
I logged on today hoping to read some good reviews from the weekend, and instead I'm reading what sounds like a bunch of sissy crybabies vent over the road conditions, lifts and crowds at Baldy. Not one of them mentioned in detail the actial terrain condtions. I mean, we received nearly a record snowfall, right? Each one of the reviewrs wrote as if they were the only ones who should have been able to visit the area that day. Let's see...So Cal on a weekend after a week of snow and the road to Big bear closed...Mt High probably way too crowded...hmmm...hey, let's try Mt. Baldy cause noone will think to go there...not even all of the people that live in the Inland Empire only 15-20 min away...guess again. And everyone sitting in there car fuming and waiting anxiously in the lift line is blaming the other person for the wait. And so craziness ensues.
Keep Mt. Blady rustic--If you can't handle it, stay home!
Rustic but not retarded
They got a 5 foot powder dump, it should be just as obvious that the conditions would be great as its obvious there's going to be crowds. Unfortunately a lot of people's experiences were dominated by crowds, bad roads, and rude staff as opposed to epic skiing.
You can have a rustic mountain run without staff who act like there doing you a favor by letting you ski and be a customer, right?
I've been to loads of overcrowded ski mountains in my day, and some how all the other businesses manage the crowds, parking, tickets, etc without rude, cussing, clueless, and unprofessional staff. Crowds don't equal an excuse for crappy business practice.
I would still recommend going to baldy over high or bear, but im writing what I've seen.
Cheese with your w(h)ine
Maybe stop in at the Lodge in the village on the way down and order some cheese with your w(h)ine. If you're gonna complain about Baldy, don't go--we won't miss you! Just go on over to Mt. High where they "manage" their parking and crowds on a busy weekend. Ha Ha.
It's not the cheese, it's the beef
Dude, relax, no one is complaining about the skiing or riding at Baldy. Problem is the way the owners run the place and why they can't figure out how to handle better an expected massive crowd. Hey, they can't even figure out how to make the chairlift run. That's my beef with them.
agree 100% I've lived in
agree 100% I've lived in Claremont all my life, after a snow Baldy is crowded, best to get over it and ride!
My Baldy review
I think I was in line with this poster yesterday, I overheard the same story about the lifts being lowered. Anyway, on to my very long review:
This is about the 6th time Ive come up to Mt. Baldy. It is my favorite local mountain to ski, that being said:
Pros: Best terrain by far in Socal, minimal crowds, Back country feel, gorgeous views, awesome powder days.
Cons: unprofessional staff, Road to the ski lifts is poorly maintained, Lifts are old and breakdown, very dependent on perfect weather, minimal snow making, minimal terrain park.
None of the other mountains in socal offer advanced terrain that anywhere near compares to baldy. It offers lots of steep terrain that has relatively large vertical, and great tree skiing (terrain under chair 1 is my favorite). Marked trails are minimal, the mountain has a make-your-own-way feel to it, that I love. Crowds are usually minimal, Most days you feel like you have the mountain to yourself, and there are small lift lines. The only exceptions to that I've experienced are days right after a storm on a weekend (still much less crowded that Mt. high or Bear).
From what I understand, this is a 'family' run resort. And it shows. Discipline is either lax or super rude. There is a older blond lady who I have seen there every time I go, and every time Is yelling at her staff, or at customers. Very rude and annoying. Twice I have taken friends to their rental shop for ski gear, The people fitting the skis didn't know what they were doing, and never had actually skied before. My friend was asking advice on whether to get a taller ski or not, and the fitter gave an attitude for some reason, probably because the fitter had no clue. Not to mention the bottom of the skiis looked like they had been gutted by a knife, and his bindings kept popping off prematurely. They would not give a voucher or refund. Rent elsewhere.
The lifts are often over-loaded and break down on more crowded or windy days, and from observing the lift operator's radio's there seems to be only 1 guy who knows how to get the lifts running when they stop. The hired Lift operators seem clueless. as a result, whenever a lift stops, you have to wait for this one guys to be reached, and then snow-mobiled to the other side of the mountain and then trouble shoot the problem. This Results in annoyingly long lift stoppages. Ive been to a chairlift where the operator was absent for about an hour, no one was there. Some staff are super friendly and nice, but lots just seem rude or don't give a ****. One lady wearing a staff jacket even shook her head and laughed at my girlfriend when she fell while I was teaching her, and just skied off. I get the vibe that a number of staff and locals aren't fond of outside people skiing this mountain, they seem to want it to themselves, but tolerate it for the money they need to run it (could be wrong but that's the vibe I've gotten).
They also lack the infrastructure to deal with crowds the few times that they have them. Rediculously long ticket lines, far away parking (How about a shuttle?).
Also, during the winter If you prefer to ski the advanced terrain, I would only recommend going during (if you have chains AND 4wd) or right after a big snow dump, and only if there's a minumum 18+ inch base. Powder days are the best in socal, but there is minimal snow making on this mountain so its more dependent on weather than others. The best terrain on the mountain in my opinion is under chair 1, and unfortunately it lies at a lower elevation between 6400 and 7800 feet, so due no snow making on these runs (that I've noticed), and warmer temperatures, sometimes its not even open.
The 3 or so mile road going from Mt baldy village to the ski lifts is steep and poorly maintained. I've seem lots of sliding and accidents on it. It is unusually steep and has sharp turns. do to changing snow levels It ices up often during storms (The road goes from about 5000 to 6400 feet). During a storm I would not recommend driving this road unless you have both 4WD AND chains, and are competent snow driver. Even then you need to be very careful of other cars sliding into you. I've seen many vehicles with 2WD and chains who simply cannot go up the hill, the tires wont grab. Often the road is closed for a couple hours on storm days due to accidents. For some reason this road does not seem to receive enough attention from snow plows and gravel trucks. Accidents ALWAYS seem to happen during storms, but there is not always plows and gravel. On good whether and non icy days though, driving up the road is no problem regardless of your vehicle.
IF you are coming for Park stuff, IE jumps, Jibs, Boxes, etc, this mountain has a small amount of it, it varies.
In summary, I love this mountain, not the staff working it. Best terrain and skiing in socal by far, conditions permitting. Compares to Big mountain skiing elsewhere. But I wish some corporation would by this mountain out and actually make something of it.
Mt baldy review continued:
I Also would like to add something I left out: One of the big allures is that Mt baldy is only a 45 minute drive from LA in good traffic. (Much closer than the other resorts).
And regarding the potential of the mountain: I am not very familiar with rules and regulations of expanding ski lifts, I'm sure its very hard if not near impossible these days. The Mt. baldy ski lifts are on the side of mt san antonio (the actual mt baldy), a very large 10,000+ foot peak. The lifts only service a side peak of this local behemoth to 8'600 feet. I hope some day they can expand the lifts to more of the mountain (would likely need corporate funding to say the least), there's a whole lot of potential there that I see. anyway, keep I'll keep dreaming.
I saw on the mt baldy trail
I saw on the mt baldy trail map about a proposed 5th chair. It looks like it's the backside off chair 4. I don't know if this is what ur talking about, but it definately looks steep! Unfortunately lift tickets will go up to pay for the high speed quad since the other lifts haven't been touched since 1970.
I've seen the 'proposed
I've seen the 'proposed expansion' on the trail map, but I talked to one of the employees about it, and they said its been on there as "proposed" for like 15 years (dont know if he was exaggerating or not) So im not too hopeful. Given that modern high speed quads can cost $15million, I dont see expansion too likely without some huge financial backing, at least.
But I was referring to expansion in general, that would be a great start. Mt san antonio (baldy) is huge. A lift to the 10000 foot peak? I hope someday. ill keep dreaming.
Proposed = In their Dreams
Its been proposed for more like 30+ years
Re: In Their Dreams
In my dreams too--I'd love to see lift access there!
I asked one of the owners
I asked one of the owners once and he said 30 million. They want to build cabins too.
Very Seasonal
Baldy is only an hour from LA and can be incredibly good skiing for advanced skiers because of all the uncrowded natural terrain *IF* it snows. The "big one" is hitting right now (jan 18), so let's hope for the best!
Thanks for the update...Been
Thanks for the update...Been looking for a recent review of the snow for baldy. Their webcam shows a thin base.
