Perfect Bluebird Cross Country Day in So. Cal.
The stars were aligned with us. We got a late start but rolled right into the
newly plowed parking lot at the top at 11:30 am ( a few minutes wasted in
Frazier Park searching for an Adv. Pass). There is a 6 ft high snow berm
around the lot which prevents snowplayers from careening into cars. The snow
is perfect...really perfect. The kind of snow you dream about in So. Cal. A
Saturday surprise 6" powder layer on top of a firm and generous 3-4' base
covers everywhere...not just protected areas. Even the rescue dogs were taking
timeouts to roll around in the snow.
We took the summit trail which was packing nicely from snowshoers to make a
nice fast return descent. Powder powder everywhere. No wind and views of the
Channel Islands, Mt. Baldy and the southern Sierras. This was a great "welcome
back" after staying away from the area for years due to poor conditions and
overcrowding.
The Forest Service was aggressively checking for Adventure Passes so make sure
to purchase one before driving up.
