We snowboarded (my son and I) and skiboarded (my wife) only at the East Resort
(fair number of cars in the East lot, so I assume that West was busy, as
usual). Arrived at 7:30. Top of Goldrush was about 50/50 ice and snow. Snow
mainly on center of run...ice on the sides of the run. At the split between
Goldrush and Sundance the conditions improved on both runs to the bottom of
the mountain (less ice, more snow). First run was the best of the day. During
second and subsequent runs any crusty snow gave way to slush and crud. To put
a positive spin on the day...we got a good workout and the conditions kept us
alert and challenged. I'd have said the conditions kept us "on our toes," but
actually I had the accident of the season when (in the crud) I straightened up
in a toe-side turn, hit some crud, and caught my downhill edge. I went
backwards over my board and hit the back of my head on the snow. Glad I
started wearing a helmet this season. That brain bucket saved me today!
Even with the less-than-optimal conditions, a day riding with family is always
better than a day at work!
Unless we get another good storm, I'd bet that East will be closing up by the
end of March. :-(
